Computational Engineering Science for Physicochemical Processes
TU Wien is Austria’s largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.
At the
Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering
, Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures, TU Wien is offering the following tenure track position for 40 hours/week. Expected start: January 2026.
The position is initially limited to a period of six years
, but the candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract.
The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures, Research Unit of Structural Simulation and Timber Engineering. Duties include research and teaching in the field of computational engineering for physicochemical processes. The research focuses on computational modeling and simulation of coupled mechanical-
physicochemical processes in natural fiber-based composites, modeling of fracture and damage processes with transfer from the specimen to the component/system scale, integration with targeted characterization experiments, and process-oriented simulations of scalable manufacturing steps as a basis for simulation-
guided, chemistry-based material development.
Tasks:
Research:
- Conducting research in the fields of coupled mechanical- physicochemical phenomena in natural fiber-based composites
- Developing computational models for predicting basic mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength, and for describing moisture, heat, and mass transport, as well as their influence on damage and fracture behavior of natural fiber-based materials
- Developing digital twins for key processing steps in the manufacture and use of biocomposites
- Integrating advanced experimental methods (e.g., spectroscopic and mechanical characterization) for model validation and parameterization
- Establishing simulation- driven, scalable development strategies for natural fiber-based materials
Teaching:
- The teaching program envisages that the career position will cover the areas of numerical mechanics and, in particular, finite element methods in lectures.
- In addition, participation in selected teaching (bachelor’s and master’s) in the field of structural simulation and timber engineering is expected. Please note that bachelor’s courses at TU Wien are currently taught in German and that corresponding language skills are required.
- Supervision of theses (bachelor’s/master’s) and doctoral students
Administration
- Taking on general tasks in the administrative area of the research unit
- Involvement in university committees
Your profile:
- A relevant completed domestic or equivalent foreign university education with a doctorate and excellent German and English language skills
- Proven expertise in computational modeling of wood, wood products, and wood-based materials
- Outstanding achievements and potential in research excellent publication record, international reputation
- Experience in leading large interdisciplinary research projects in the field of natural fiber-based materials
- Team and communication skills
- Relevant teaching experience in academic teaching in lectures and exercises and in supervising or co-supervising academic theses
- Experience in the design and implementation of research projects and a proven ability to attract competitive third-party funding
- Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with research areas within the institute and faculty as well as other faculties at TUW
We offer:
- A wide variety and exciting range of tasks in a collegial team
- Hybrid working style with up to 60% teleworking option
- A range of attractive social benefits (see Fringe-Benefits )
- Wide range of internal and external training opportunities, various career options
- Central location of workplace as well as good accessibility (U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz)
TU Wien is committed to increasing the proportion of women in particular in leadership positions. Female applicants are explicitly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to women when equally qualified, unless reasons specific to a male applicant tilt the balance in his favour.
People with special needs are equally encouraged to apply. In case of any questions, please contact the confidant for disabled persons at the university, Mr. Gerhard Neustätter.
The employment starts as University Assistant with a minimum salary of EUR 4,932.90 gross (14 x per year) according to the collective bargaining agreement for a PostDoc. After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 5,808.20 gross (14 x per year).
We look forward to receiving your application until November 27th, 2025.
