Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, located in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India, is an international spiritual community with centers in 110 countries. Students of all ages and backgrounds come together to study spiritual knowledge that acknowledges the traditions of all faiths, and to learn about the nature of God, karma, time, and soul. The teachings at Brahma Kumaris delineate an enlightened lifestyle, and through various social services and partnerships, the university promotes spiritual understanding, elevated action, and leadership with integrity.
Founded in 1936 by Dada Lekharj (later known as Brahma Baba), the group was originally called Om Mandali, and was located in Hyderabad, Sindh. (Dada Lekharj was a wealthy and respected member of the community who had a series of visions of the nature of the soul, God, and time.) The group subsequently relocated to Karachi, which was at the time a part of colonial India, where they practiced for 14 years. They moved to Mount Abu, Rajasthan in 1950, where the headquarters of Brahma Kumaris remains to this day.
Brahma Kumaris offers students the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, including positive thinking, stress-free living, and Raja Yoga Meditation. Because the organization has locations worldwide, individuals of many backgrounds have access to these teachings. Peace Village, which is Brahma Kumaris’s spiritual retreat facility in Haines Falls, New York, allows students to have access to weekend retreats where they deepen their study of yoga, meditation, and spiritual exploration.
The organization is very active in community outreach. Through its programs, members currently reach out to individuals in detention centers and youth groups throughout the world. Brahma Kumaris is very active in interfaith outreach, and the organization actively participates in World Congress of Faiths, United Religions Initiative, and Council for a Parliament of the World's religions.
