The University Spin-off company Gable-Systems B.V. is developing a novel Gait and Balance trainings robot, GABLE. This robot will significantly help the annually 10 million survivors of stroke with gait rehabilitation. These patients are still rehabilitated with a manual form of gait training which is requiring up to three therapists. With the introduction of robotic systems, it was promised to reduce labor cost by only using one therapist. However, the available robotic gait trainers are unable to substitute the quality of manual gait training and are therefore used as a complementary tool. As a result, they do not significantly reduce labor costs and the highly priced (€300.000,-) robotic gait trainers are hard to earn back. Nevertheless, with the increasing amount of stroke patients and high cost of rehabilitation, the demand for a cost effective robot gait trainer is still present. GABLE will be the first robotic gait trainer which is able to substitute manual gait training without losing quality of training. With the benefits of robotics, therapy time and labor cost are reduced. These unique selling points are achieved by increased training quality, use-ability and automation. Furthermore GABLE does not only train gait, it also trains balance, which is trivial to human walking, in an advanced manner. This multi-functionality enables GABLE to cover multiple aspects of the gait & balance recovery program, which is another unique selling point. A short market analysis concluded that the addressable market is around 50 systems a year. With a sales price around €300.000,- this is resulting in 15 million a year. Market analyzers, like Wintergreenresearch, predict that the amount of robotics used in rehabilitation will grow with a factor 40 before 2020. Currently, a functional model of GABLE has been built with over 10 years of experience from the University of Twente in gait and balance training. A patent application has been filed. Therapists and a product acquiring director of Sint Maartens kliniek Nijmegen experienced GABLE’s potential and believe GABLE can become a valuable product in their clinic. A SWOT analysis is showing great strengths and opportunities, i.e. an innovative product and a fast growing market demand. On the other hand weaknesses are present, but can be overcome by cooperating with production and marketing partners. Threats are kept small by the current lead in technology and a fast market entry. Gable-Systems management is proud, that entities like Red med tech Discovery fund, Norma, Ten Kate Huizinga, Beckhoff Germany, GML instruments, Meyra and Imetron all show significant support in the development of GABLE, the innovation in gait rehabilitation robotics.
