#Genode 26.08 prepares the foundation for new features coming in fall 2026. The per-component VFS is now reconfigurable at runtime without interruption/restart of the running component. Our custom kernel received optimizations for improved performance on PC. Mechanisms for timing and timeout handling got revised for reduced idle load and improved timing stability. Feature-wise, we ported VirtualBox 7 and developed a Goa-based SDK running natively on Sculpt OS. https://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/26.08

#Genode 26.05 completes our migration from GitHub to Codeberg.org! On the technical side, we reshaped #SculptOS into re-usable building blocks and significantly improved our driver base by fine-grained DMA-buffer accounting, MSI/MSI-X support, Linux 6.18 driver sources, LTE QMI/MBIM/ECM, I2C HID, as well as an Intel HDA SOF audio driver. Also, Qt6 was updated to 6.8.3, a libslirp-based NIC driver de-privileges networking on Genode/Linux, and Goa is now on par with Sculpt OS 26.04. Finally, the r...

Sculpt OS 26.04 lays all building blocks of the operating system into the hands of the user and, thus, invites the user to explore, customize, and restructure the system architecture on the fly. Right after booting the provided image, the user is presented with all the running components ready to be controlled and extended. This is made possible by a major paradigm shift under the hood: The system no longer processes configuration data as mere input to its internal data model but it exposes the ...

Today, we released #Genode 26.02, which most prominently replaces XML with the custom-designed HID configuration format. Also, we completed the first half of our project's migration from GitHub to Codeberg, updated DDE-Linux-based protocol stacks to version kernel 6.18, and further cultivated the genode-world repository as designated place for ported third-party software. Further, we added new input-processing capabilities and continued our improvements of the Goa SDK. All changes and additions ...

#Genode 25.11 wraps up our year of "rigidity, clarity, performance" with under-the-hood improvements as well as prominent changes. Our custom kernel received special tuning of its new CPU scheduler for Sculpt-OS workloads. The new human-inclined data (HID) configuration format is now supported in almost all Genode components (simultaneously with XML). The most impactful topic, however, is a new modus operandi of co-maintaining applications and libraries in the Genode-World repository, which is r...

Genode 25.08 is out and brings a whole bunch of deep technical improvements of the framework in preparation of the next Sculpt OS release in October. A highlight of the release is the introduction of a new kernel scheduler for fairness and low latency to our custom kernel platform. The redesigned scheduler specifically addresses the requirements of Sculpt OS. The design was inspired by Borrowed-virtual-time (Duda and Cheriton 1999) and takes years of experience with dynamic workloads on diverse ...

Let's celebrate Genode 25.05! According to this year's motto "rigidity, clarity, and performance", the Genode 25.05 release focuses on API safety, consolidation work, and developer tooling. The most prominent change in this release is the much revised framework API that no longer relies on the C++ exception mechanism but precisely encodes all possible error conditions as sum types, an inspiration taken from the Rust-language community. This approach rules out several classes of programming errors...

Genode 25.02 comes up with a mix of features, optimizations, and hardware-compatibility improvements. Most remarkably, we expedited the multi-monitor support published with the previous release to cover multi-monitor window management and the seamless integration of multi-monitor virtual machines. Moreover, the long anticipated combination of Qt 6.6 and Chromium Webengine 112 is now available, which brings our port of the Falkon web browser on par with the modern web. A native port of Qemu, user...
