The company builds churches, community facilities, medical centers, municipal buildings, parks, private business buildings, and schools. When Paul Pogue founded Pogue Construction in 1979, the company built only residential projects. By 1980, however, the firm was already doing so well that it sought to diversify and take on larger projects. Its first nonresidential project was a school, and today Pogue Construction specializes in schools.
Considering how many schools Pogue Construction has built over the past 30 years, it is natural that the company’s philanthropic efforts go toward education. Pogue Construction has given approximately one million dollars to various educational foundations supporting the Texas school districts of McKinney, Mesquite, Rockwall, Lewisville, Northwest, Decatur, Allen, Melissa, and Van Alstyne. The company has also donated money for scholarships at Austin College and Collin College. Pogue Construction believes employees at all levels of the company should be personally involved in promoting education. While President Ben Pogue sits on the board of the Lovejoy Educational Foundation, the company’s employees volunteer and mentor at the local Press Elementary School.
The Texas Association of Administrators and Texas Association of School Boards have recognized Pogue Construction multiple times for elementary schools built by the company. These awards were given specifically for value and process of planning, overall value, educational appropriateness and innovation, and for design. Additionally, the National School Boards Association Exhibition of School Architecture has given Pogue Construction the Citation Award of Architectural Excellence. The company also received the Shirley Cooper Award, which is given by the American Association of School Administrators, American Institute of Architects, and the Council of Educational Facility Planners every year to the project that best meets the educational needs of its students.
