For five weeks I lived and worked on a mountainside diary farm near Annecy (FR) The 30 cows were brought to graze on the pastures every morning, after we milked them for the Reblochon de Savoie a traditional cheese made from raw milk. During this time I not only freshed-up my french (taste), but also learned to make hay.

I was included in the everyday rearing process of whitefly and Encarsia, a variety of other beneficials like mites and Aphidius and attended the chief of the company at his consultant visits at his customer’s vegetable glasshouses.

Mid- sized dairy farm, GE, Buhmann, Selent Here I was milking and feeding the cows, as well as grubbing and straw reaping.

Organic farm, GE, Bauckhof Klein Süstedt, 2 month Specialized in laying hens, broilers and turkeys My main responsibility were the 6000 broilers and 2500 turkeys. Especially the turkeys needed my full attention, for they do not tolerate the smallest deviation from their special needs for example in climate and light. I was also involved in the egg production system and I got an insight in the slaughtering process of the farm-owned abattoir. Afterwards I enjoyed coming back for holiday jobs.

For this one month summerjob, I was an employee in a garden centre, responsible for the customer service and maintaining the plants.

Apprenticeship as a Gardener with the specialization in tree nursery In one of the biggest tree nurseries in Europe I learned a lot about the handling of many different trees and bushes and experienced working under all weather conditions. The usage of Nematodes against weevil larvae was my first impression of the use of beneficial organisms and encouraged my decision to study agricultural sci. at the Kiel University, for there was Prof. Dr. Ehlers (founder of e~nema GmbH) as a lecturer. Final grade: 1,7
