Daniel Johnson

At the Chair of Environment and Economics, I research, teach and supervise master students while also focusing research activities on sustainability issues in business and in society with the SustBusy Research Center.

Within the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP), I worked alongside top researchers in the Ecosystem Services and Management (ESM) department. With funding from the National Academy of Sciences, it was possible for me to conduct research on ecosystem services of green infrastructure in adaptation planning against the urban heat island effect.

Performed field measurements of greenhouse gas exchanges in a bog near Hannover, Germany. Work was also carried out with a sphagnum farming project by preparing and planting moss in a former peatland where peat was extracted.

Performed literature searches concerning paper-based devices and using paper as a substrate for electronics, proofread articles for publication, and translated the institute's website to English.

Helped students use Matlab for homework exercises, performed literature searches in wireless communication technology, smart grids, and energy storage, and proofread articles for publication.

Language guidance and supervision was given to students working on a mechanical engineering design project.

My research work focuses on the intersection of sustainable urban water management and environmental economics. In order to build and plan more sustainable cities, we need to value the extra benefits, or ecosystem services, of urban green areas.
