Currently, I am investigating the role of lipid mediators, especially S1P in the pathophysiology of food allergies. In addition, I am characterizing S1P as a new biomarker for disease severity of food adverse reactions. I am also involved in management and coordination of the project "Food allergies - a hard nut to crack" , a public outreach project aimed to explain development, diagnosis, and prevention of food allergies and the important role of the intestine as immune organ.

Lipid mediators play important roles in pathophysiology of allergies. Colleagues and I could show 1. Human TH2 cells selectively express functional CysLT1 and LTD4 causes chemotaxis of TH2 cells providing a potential explanation for the anti-inflammatory effects of CysLT1 antagonists used in asthma therapy. 2. S1P induces steroid-resistant, pro-remodeling pathway in human airway smooth muscle cells suggesting a potential novel treatment strategy for inhibiting airway remodeling in asthma.

Characterization of new hormonal systems in arthropods with a focus on neuropeptide GPCRs. Annotation of GPCRs and their neuropeptides in newly seqeuenced genomes, cloning, overexpression in human cell lines, and de-orphanization of neuropeptide GPCRs.
