•Commissioned a new device for the investigation of gas adsorption processes. •Conducted adsorption experiments using toluene and activated carbon. Uptake values were established, and the effects of experimental variables were assessed. Optimal operating conditions for recovering toluene from air were thus determined. • Performed tests on desorption of toluene from activated carbon. Operating parameters were varied to optimize the thermal regeneration of the carbon, allowing for longer adsorption lifetimes.
