I ran a popular French club and loved finding new and exciting ways to engage the children. I used a wide range of activities to help develop speaking and listening skills, including songs, rhymes and games. I particularly enjoyed sharing the traditions of French-speaking countries, from Cameroonian chants and French Easter chocolates to Belgian waffles and Saint-Nicolas. During a break from translation, I took out a teaching franchise with La Jolie Ronde. After an initial period of training and assessment, I ran popular lunchtime French classes to children aged 5 – 10 years. I also gained a Level 2 Safeguarding qualification.

I was invited to join Balthasar, a specialised technical translation company, having collaborated successfully on numerous freelance projects. My role involved translating texts relating to the heating and renewable energy sectors, primarily from German to English. Documents varied from manuals and webpages to brochures and trade fair displays. I also checked work by other translators for accuracy and consistency.

I set up my freelance translation business under the name PointOne Language Services and quickly built up a client base of European translation agencies and direct customers. The main focus for the business was to provide accurate, high-quality translations to discerning customers. I translated primarily from German, specialising in technical and marketing texts, but also offered translation from French and proofreading. Over four years I translated just shy of one million words.

Executive assistant to the CEO of an international electronics company (formerly known as Quantum Research Group). While translation was not my main duty, working in the fast-paced environment of a high-tech company made me appreciate the pressures, concerns and demands of translation end users.

Project manager and translator in company specialising in Scandinavian languages. Responsible for international portfolio of clients. I successfully liaised with clients regarding new translation requirements, coordinated in-house and freelance resources and delivered projects in a deadline-driven environment. Role required high IT proficiency and the ability to multitask effectively. I also translated and proofread technical and commercial documentation from German and French into English using Trados.

Project manager working on localisation projects for Hewlett-Packard into as many as 24 languages. Projects comprised translation of marketing material for product packaging and content from client’s globalisation management system. Responsible for coordinating in-house teams and external resources, communicating with client, carrying out project administration via custom-made workflow system, resolving terminology and other quality issues.
