The work involved the sales of firearms, ammunition, camping accessories and fishing equipment, as well as taking special orders made by customers. Very good technical knowledge and experience with firearms, hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing was required. Familiarity with current firearm laws and regulations and strong safety compliance was very important. Other duties included use of Eftpos and credit card facilities, end of day balance and other general duties.

As part of the role I was responsible for the production of knife sharpness testing devices, including design updates, supplier interaction, inventory management, assembly processes, packaging and shipping. I also established a Kanban inventory management system to address delivery delays due to insufficiently controlled stock levels and to improve cash flow.

The majority of work consisted of designing and managing small projects for the company’s geothermal drilling operation. Projects ranged from making new pins to designing and supervising the manufacturing of a 4m extension to a catwalk for a drill rig. The software used for drafting was Autodesk Inventor, with some limited use of Bentley Microstation 2D. Frequent site meetings were held to set deadlines for projects, report on progress, review designs with technical staff and modify designs if required.

The work was mainly drafting using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD Mechanical 2D software. Parts, assemblies and drawings were made for the production and installation of components on the new Tranz Scenic railway carriages being manufactured by the company. I was involved in implementing a new drawing numbering system. Some design work and project management was undertaken for some of the smaller parts and components on the prototype luggage carriage.

This employment was an extension of my studies completing a Certificate in Trade Technology (Carpentry) Level 3. Duties ranged from doing maintenance to building new structures and were relevant to learning the carpentry trade. Most of the work was done alongside and assisting qualified carpenters. A record of all the work had to be kept during this time. Courses relevant to my trade had to be attended, i.e. first aid, Ramset license, etc.

Duties mainly involved the sales of firearms, ammunition and hunting accessories. Technical knowledge hunting, shooting and reloading was required. Strong compliance with safety regulations and firearm laws was important. The handling of telephonic enquiries, stock taking, cash handling and basic administration were all part of daily duties. It was important to maintain good customer relations.
