Tabitha Wood

Founder and president of campus advocacy group to fight human trafficking by lobbying and hosting events to raise awareness and funds. Built website in WordPress. Produced video and written online content related to human trafficking. Garnered publicity for several successful events, and also organized partnerships between STEMS and other local activist groups.

Wrote press releases, updated blog, and assisted with website re-design. In February 2012, helped organize the 56th annual Commission on the Status of Women Conference at UN Headquarters to address the challenges of rural women worldwide.

Began as a staff reporter covering religion and community service beats. Promoted to deputy news editor where I pitched stories, advised campus reporters, edited stories, and updated the website. I later became an editorial board member, where I researched and wrote editorials on a team with other board members.

Ability One is a government agency that ensures equal government contracting opportunity for the blind and otherwise severely disabled. During my time there I wrote requests for proposals (RFPs), hosted communications training programs, compiled agency history for lobby display, and edited annual report.

Did extensive research for the editorial board. Wrote editorials dealing with public health and local law. Topics included the ethics of tobacco companies moving advertising dollars to the developing world and the convoluted laws governing street food vendors in Maryland. Temporarily managed op-ed submissions. Also participated in the 2008 High School Multimedia Workshop.

I worked in the Amazonia exhibition, where I prepared diets for monkeys, sloth, tortoises, sting rays, and arapaima (a very large fish species). I also cleaned the filters for the arapaima enclosure, cultured crickets, and cultured mill-worms. I was responsible for either cleaning the rainbow boa enclosure or handling the boas while a partner cleaned the enclosure. I was also responsible for teaching visitors about animals in the exhibition and about Amazon conservation efforts.

Worked in the classroom at the Zoofari Summer Camp to teach children ages 5-12 about animals, science, and photography. Led walking tours of the zoo with my class, relating sights to curriculum.
