It can act as L2 bridge or L3 router and implements lots of protocols: ARP, ICMPv4/v6, IPv4/v6, TCP, UDP, DHCP, DNS, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP... It extracts messages or files from those protocols and pass them to other filtering modules which can request to modify and/or replace them or to abort the connection.
