Tenure track professorships: A big boost for science
Are you one of the best (junior) researchers in the world and want to raise the level of basic and clinical research with your pioneering achievements? The best (junior) researchers from around the world who hold their own in the selection procedure have a unique opportunity as tenure track professors at Med Uni Graz: they can establish a working group in their field of research in the state-of-the-art, point-of-care environment of Medical Science City Graz and share their special expertise with the international research community over the course of a long-term scientific career. The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, an evaluation of the qualification agreement may be possible sooner. When the defined goals have been achieved, an unlimited term contract as an associate professor is concluded, which entails belonging to the professorial curia as well as taking on responsibility for one's own field of research. We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of cardiovascular engineering. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and teaching in the field of heart surgery and structural interventions with a focus on heart valve replacement and repair. The unique Division of Cardiac Surgery offers the full spectrum of surgical and interventional treatment options for heart disease. It is embedded in the University Heart Center Graz with very strong and significant cooperation between heart surgery and cardiology. The new head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery should be an expert in surgical and interventional therapies for heart valve disease and a renowned international scientist with an outstanding publication track record. The division is also the home of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Microinvasive Heart Surgery, whose budget is EUR 5 million. The successful applicant will be expected to work in close cooperation with this laboratory and will have access to research funding. The Department of Cardiology has four tenure track professorships in different basic research areas related to heart medicine that harmonize perfectly with this planned professorship. Excellent research infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment, including mock circulation loops, cadavers and animal facilities with hybrid rooms and 3D visualization, provide an optimal foundation for the implementation of high-level scientific projects. Furthermore, the department benefits from a well-established network of national and international partners from academia and industry, which supports the development of innovative research initiatives and promotes interdisciplinary exchange. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.
Core duties and responsibilities:
- Conducting cutting-edge research in the field of cardiovascular engineering with a focus on heart valve therapy
- Continuous high-quality scientific publication activity
- Leading an internationally recognized research group and acquiring third-party funding
- Networking through national and international research collaborations
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting young researchers
- Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area
Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in engineering or a related field
- Profound research expertise in the field of cardiovascular engineering
- Experience in developing heart valves or cardiac devices
- Experience in developing test cycles to evaluate the hemodynamics of cardiac and vascular implants
- Proven track record of high-quality publications and peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding as a lead or principal investigator
- Experience in leading a research group
- Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and postgraduate students
- Work experience abroad or at a different institution than where the PhD was completed (at least 2 months)
- High level of proficiency in both written and spoken English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and strong willingness to learn German
The ideal candidate has the following profile:
- Experience with ex vivo isolated heart assays
- In-depth knowledge of and experience in cardiovascular measurement technology
- Experience with and qualifications for conducting acute and chronic animal experimentation to evaluate new implants
- Industrial experience preferred
- Willingness to cooperate, open-mindedness and ability to work in a team
- Responsible work habits, problem-solving skills and outstanding motivation
- Communication and social skills
- Management and leadership skills
