for study investigating new methods of diagnosing respiratory illnesses
The BreathForDx (breathfordx.org) project is looking for a student research assistant (HiWi) who is fluent in Arabic and English. Fluency in Dari, Pashto, Kurdish or Turkish will also be considered.
The assistant will support a study that is investigating the use of a novel breath sampling method to diagnose respiratory illnesses. Please specify fluency in languages in your application. Note that you do not have to have a medical degree or medical training for this position. The position is part-time and the time commitment will vary by week, up to a maximum of 42,5 hours per month.
The physical work station is at the Patrick Henry Village migrant arrival centre in Heidelberg, and the assistant will be required to work on-site between 1 – 3 mornings per week (8:00-12:00). Additional meetings may be held remotely and at the UKHD campus in Neuenheim. The study is affiliated with the Department of Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine as well as the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health. A current student status is required for this position; the start date 1st November 2025.

Your tasks
- Assist in explanation of the study, participant recruitment and sample collection
- Qualitative data collection through interviews
- Transcribe and translate interviews with the help of transcription software; perform quality checks on transcriptions and translations
- support in additional BreathForDx project and research work.
Your profile
- Currently enrolled student with relevant work experience or study in the fields of public health, sociology, biology, medicine, social work, anthropology or similar.
- Knowledge and/or experience in the medical or public health fields is desirable.
- Experience with public health research and data collection is an advantage.
- Excellent bilingual communication skills, both verbal and written in Arabic and English. Fluency in languages noted above would be considered (Dari, Pashto, Turkish, Kurdish).
- Proficient computer skills; outstanding listening, retention and note-taking skills.
