Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a private research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. Each research area is assigned to a specific research center, of which there are twelve totals. Workplace
The FBK Center for Digital Industry (DI) Center it focuses its research on digital technologies for the various domains in industry (e.g., manufacturing, aerospace, railway, automotive, energy, agriculture, etc.) by creating applications for critical systems, adaptive and autonomous systems, advanced perception, diagnostics quality control and prediction systems. Further research areas include precision farming, robotics, metrology, cultural heritage (in particular 3D modeling) and geomatics.
The available position is in the
Software Engineering Research
Unit (SE) Unit of FBK-DI. The SE unit focuses primarily on (1) requirements engineering and (2) code analysis and testing. In the first area, the scientific challenges deal with the explicit representation of autonomic behaviors (e.g., self-adaptive systems), the normative constraints and requirements engineering for distributed software development. In the area of software testing, the challenge is to automate the generation of the test cases, the detection of faults, their localization in the code and the application of counter-measures.

Job Description
The candidate will work in research projects of the Software Engineering (SE) unit at FBK, serving as a software architect and developer in the design, development, integration, and testing of software components subject to standards in the context of complex control systems, Intelligent multi-agent based approaches, and generative AI for the automated generation of software tests in the railway and space domains in close collaboration with the researchers of the unit.
The successful candidate will contribute to the following tasks:
- Defining architectures for complex systems;
- Developing, maintaining, and evolving existing software components as well as new software components independently;
- Collaborating in the testing phase of software components in accordance with the requirements of relevant standards;
- Analyzing and evaluating software quality and performance.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- Master degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics (or equivalent degrees);
- Relevant experience in complex software system design and development in research and industrial projects
- Experience in software development, development tools and technologies (e.g., Eclipse, IntelliJ, VS Code, Git, Maven, Gradle)
- Good programming skills in the following programming languages Python, Java, C;
- Oral and written proficiency in English;
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment, with a goal-oriented attitude;
- Accuracy, flexibility, proactivity;
- Good communication and relational skills.
Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:
- Knowledge in software testing and formal methods
- Problem solving and planning skills

Type of contract: fixed-term contract
Working hours
: Full time (38 h per week)
Start date
: Preferably October 2025
Duration : 24 months with the possibility of extending the contract depending on funding

Gross annual salary: about € 38.500, plus objectives achievements bonus
