The Stellos Lab at the Department of Cardiovascular Research is seeking for a permament full-time position a highly motivated and talented

Senior Scientist / Group Leader on Bioinformatics / Computational Biology on RNA Regulation in Disease (f/m/d)

This position offers the opportunity to work on groundbreaking research in RNA biology while contributing to impactful discoveries in cardiovascular science.

The Stellos Lab at the Department of Cardiovascular Research ( ) of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the Heidelberg University is a leading research group dedicated to advancing our understanding of cardiovascular biology and diseases. Our work is at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge computational and experimental approaches to explore the role of RNA biology and RNA modifications in cardiovascular health and disease.

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyze high-throughput sequencing data, including RNA-seq, epitranscriptomic (e.g., m6A-seq), and single-cell sequencing, with a focus on RNA biology and modifications
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines for data preprocessing, analysis, and visualization
  • Perform integrative multi-omics data analyses (transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics) to uncover novel insights into RNA-mediated regulatory mechanisms in cardiovascular biology
  • Collaborate with experimental biologists to design studies, interpret results, and validate computational findings
  • Apply machine learning and statistical modeling techniques to identify patterns and predict functional impacts of RNA modifications
  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and grant proposals
  • Provide bioinformatics support and training to lab members as needed

Required qualifications:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or a related field
  • Strong expertise in RNA biology and/or RNA modifications
  • Proven experience with programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia and bioinformatics tools
  • Proficiency in working with high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-seq, CLIP-seq, or epitranscriptomics)
  • Familiarity with cloud computing and high-performance computing (HPC) environments
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in statistical analysis and data visualization
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with cardiovascular research or related biomedical fields
  • Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn)
  • Familiarity with databases and tools for RNA biology (e.g., GENCODE, RNAcentral, Modomics)
  • Experience in multi-omics data integration and pathway analysis

What we offer:

  • A permanent position with a competitive salary under the E15 TV-L pay scale
  • Access to state-of-the-art computational and experimental resources
  • A dynamic, collaborative, and supportive research environment
  • Opportunities for professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • A vibrant and international scientific community at the forefront of cardiovascular research

We stand for equal opportunities. Severely disabled persons are given priority in the case of equal suitability.

We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in science. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in computational biology and cardiovascular research.
