Researcher - Engineering & Physics for Biomedical Innovations (f/m/x)
At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.
We are developing a novel microfluidic chip technology that uses surface acoustic wave detection of photoacoustic signals to identify medically relevant cell types – fast, compact, and affordable. This approach, developed in the Cell Engineering Lab at Helmholtz Munich in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden (Göllner et al., ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2025), holds great potential for early detection of diseases like melanoma, malaria, sickle cell anemia, and even metabolic disorders.
Backed by a prestigious ERC Proof of Concept Grant, we are now looking for a Researcher or Postdoc (f/m/x) with a background in engineering or physics – and the ambition to help shape the transition of this early-stage technology (TRL 2-3) towards real-world clinical applications (TRL 5-6).
We particularly encourage applications from candidates interested in entrepreneurial paths, including spin-off opportunities supported by programs like GO-Bio.
Your tasks
- Drive the advancement and integration of laser diode and chip technologies in close collaboration with research teams
- Perform proof-of-concept measurements using medically relevant cell types
- Prepare a scientific publication to showcase the advances of the concept
- Conduct in depth technology competitive analysis, market landscape overview, and positioning for subsequent fundraising and go-to-market activities
- Actively contribute to securing follow-up funding together with the fundraising team
Your profile
- University degree (MSc or PhD) in physics, engineering, medicine, biology or a related field
- Practical experience in optics, signal processing and working with experimental setups (e.g. MATLAB)
- Interest in medical diagnostics and innovation; experience in start-ups or entrepreneurship is a plus
- Self-motivated, solution-oriented, and comfortable working in dynamic, interdisciplinary teams
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English; German skills are welcome but not required
If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 1 year but may be extended under certain circumstances.
"We believe that diversity is the key to groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. Our flexible working models and remote options create a supportive environment for balancing work and family life. For us, contributing to a healthier society in such an inspiring workplace is truly meaningful."
