What you will enjoy doing

Together with steam reforming and autothermal reforming, partial oxidation is a well-established process for producing syngas as a feedstock for downstream processes such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and methanol synthesis. To achieve optimal process performance, reactor designs must be tailored to the specific feedstock and operating conditions. The analysis and optimization of reactor designs require a detailed investigation of flow dynamics, reaction kinetics, and heat transfer, as well as the interactions between these phenomena. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations provide a powerful tool for performing such investigations.

The objective of this thesis is to review, evaluate, and enhance state-of-the-art simulation methods for the CFD-based modelling of partial oxidation reactors.

  • You conduct a literature survey on the performance and applicability of turbulence, reaction kinetics, turbulence-chemistry interaction, and heat transfer models under partial oxidation conditions.
  • The Evaluation of kinetic mechanisms for the simulation of partial oxidation reactors will be a part of the work
  • You create and validate CFD models for partial oxidation reactors
  • Implementation and assessment of advanced modelling approaches from the literature within the CFD framework

What makes you great

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master's program in chemical, process, or mechanical engineering, or a related field, with excellent academic performance and good command of either German or English
  • You have knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and reaction engineering / reaction modelling
  • Ideally, you have experience with CFD simulations (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, STAR-CCM+, or comparable software)
