Compensation: Commensurate with experience, hourly or monthly retainer (Typically $125-200 per hour)
Position Summary
CharterSource is seeking a mission-aligned Fractional CFO to provide strategic financial leadership and operational oversight. This contract-based role is ideal for a seasoned finance professional who thrives in dynamic, impact-driven environments and has experience with public sector or nonprofit accounting—especially in education or charter schools.
The Fractional CFO will partner with the Board of Directors & School Leaders to ensure the financial health, compliance, and sustainability of the schools in their portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership
Advise on long-term financial planning and organizational sustainability.
Develop financial strategies aligned with the school’s mission and growth goals.
Serve as a thought partner to the School Leader and Board Finance Committee.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process and provide regular re-forecasts.
Model multiple financial scenarios to support programmatic decision-making.
Financial Operations
Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and accounting practices.
Monitor cash flow, accounts payable/receivable, and bank reconciliations.
Coordinate with the school’s bookkeeper or finance team as needed.
Compliance & Reporting
Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal funding requirements, including grants and audits.
Prepare and present financial reports to the board, authorizers, and other stakeholders such as investors and rating agencies.
Oversee audit preparation and interface with external auditors.
Risk Management & Fiscal Policies
Evaluate financial risks and implement internal controls.
Update and enforce finance-related policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
7–10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
Experience in charter schools, affiliated building companies, public education, or nonprofits strongly preferred
Proficiency in financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Excel, budgeting tools)
Understanding of state and federal education funding streams (e.g., Title I, IDEA)
CPA or MBA preferred but not required
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Working Style & Values

Comfortable working independently and with limited in-person oversight
