Position Summary
The Senior Accountant serves as the organization’s lead day‑to‑day accounting professional, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations for a dynamic nonprofit. This role combines hands‑on transaction processing with higher‑level analysis, month‑end close responsibilities, and cross‑departmental collaboration. The Senior Accountant strengthens financial stewardship, supports strategic decision‑making, and helps maintain a culture of transparency and accountability. This is an excellent role for a detail‑oriented, systems‑savvy accountant who enjoys both independent work and partnering with program and operations staff.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Accounting

• Manage all daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll journal entries, and bank reconciliations.
• Maintain the general ledger, bank and credit cards and ensure accurate coding aligned with the chart of accounts, grant budgets, and departmental structures.
• Prepare and post recurring and adjusting journal entries.
• Monthly tie-out of all balance sheet accounts, including reconciling cash and bus tokens, expensing prepaids, recording depreciation, maintaining prepaid and fixed asset schedule
• Lead the monthly close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies.
• Bi-weekly payroll preparation and review · Payroll journal entry · Submission of IRA contributions to American Funds bi-weekly · Update payroll withholdings (IRA selection, benefit enrollment, garnishment)

Grant & Contract Accounting

• Track restricted revenue and expenses across grants and contracts.
• Prepare grant expenditure reports and support program staff with budget-to-actual analysis.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funder requirements.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

• Support the annual budgeting process, including preparing templates, consolidating departmental budgets, and assisting leaders with projections.
• Produce monthly financial reports for leadership and the board, including variance analysis and narrative summaries.
• Provide financial insights to support strategic planning and operational decision-making.

Compliance & Audit

• Maintain internal controls and ensure adherence to accounting policies and nonprofit best practices.
• Prepare audit schedules and serve as the primary liaison to external auditors.
• Support preparation of Form 990, 1099 and other regulatory filings.
• Assist with insurance renewals, state charitable registrations, and other compliance tasks as needed.

Systems & Process Improvement

• Maintain and optimize accounting systems.
• Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and strengthen internal controls.
• Support implementation of new tools, integrations, and financial processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with HR, operations, and program teams to ensure accurate coding, payroll allocations, and financial understanding.
• Provide training and support to staff on financial procedures and budget management.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including nonprofit experience.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, restricted funds, grant tracking).
• Proficiency with accounting software and Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, service‑oriented approach.

Preferred

• CPA or progress toward CPA.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
• Familiarity with HR/payroll systems and allocations.
• Demonstrated experience working with and for African American men, communities, and families.
• Strong understanding of racial equity, culturally responsive programming, and trauma‑informed practices.
