Praedoc (f/m/x) - IronArch Project
(30hours, per week / part-time)
We are looking for an outstanding doctoral researcher to join the project “Iron architecture in the Austrian monarchy. History of construction, material-related developments and theoretical discourse.” with a 3-year employment period. The project is based in the research group “Historical Building Research” (Head G. Styhler-Aydın) of the Department of Historical Archaeology (see https://www.oeaw.ac.at/en/oeai/research/historical-archaeology/historische-bauforschung/iron-architecture-in-the-austrian-monarchy)
The Historical Building Research group`s interest focuses to the scientific investigation of the built cultural heritage, applying integrative methods of building documentation and building analysis. Chronologically, the research spans from antiquity until the modern era. Within the project, a multidisciplinary analysis of the 19th century iron structures of the Austrian monarchy (as e.g. roof structures, glass houses, hall structures, bridges) is conducted by sustainable recording and evaluation.
Your Tasks
- Scholarly documentation of selected iron structures in architectural plans, by images and written description, including data recording on site (building survey) and in archives
- Creating digital 3D architectural models of the structures
- Preparing a comparative architectural study
- Active participation in the scientific publication of project results and the preparation of conferences/symposiums
- Cooperation with project partners
Your Profile
- Diploma or Master’s degree in Architecture or related disciplines, preferably with a focus on building research and historic structures / construction history / monument preservation
- Academic training in building research / construction history / monument preservation (e.g. via advanced study modules or specialized master studies) and experience in building survey
- Ability to work independently and creatively, willingness to integrate into a multidisciplinary work environment, and strong team spirit
- Good computer skills, especially experience with CAD and 3D modelling software, and processing of 3D point clouds
- Willingness to travel within Austria for project-related purpose
- Very good skills in German and English communication and writing. German language skills on native speaker level (all archive material in German)

- Start of the position on May 1st, 2026, advertised for 36 months. The annual gross salary according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is € 39.855,69.
