Über diesen Job
As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
Our Research Group Hybrid Electric Aircraft Technologies is part of the Center for Transport Technologies. Our focus lies on the delivery of advanced Aerial Vehicle Technologies, supporting carbon neutrality and technological sovereignty in air transport. We are exploring new technologies, solutions, and methodologies to ensure the safe operation of aircraft in icing conditions, design and develop hydrogen fuel systems and hybrid electric storage and propulsion for next generation aircraft.
As a member of our growing team, you will perform research and be involved in the execution of ambitious and large-scale European research projects funded by the Horizon Europe programme. For our location in Vienna we are looking for:
Scientists (f/m/d) for Numerical Modeling & Simulation of In-Flight Icing and/or Advanced Propulsion Systems for Aircrafts
CENTER FOR TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES
- You will investigate and simulate the in-flight icing characteristics, ice protection technologies and advanced propulsion systems of current and upcoming aircraft configurations. This will imply the development of new methodologies, improving numerical models for digital twin, and design new aeronautic engineering solutions.
- Additionally, depending on your background, you may also conduct research tests and experimental campaign to validate and benchmark models, as well as develop new AI-enhanced approaches in the field mentioned above.
- You will interface with experienced scientists and engineers in the field of aerospace across Europe.
- You work in direct contact with European Institutions and international partners from research and industry on multi-annual large-scale collaborative projects.
- You will build your own network and contribute to the definition of our strategic research direction, preparing proposals for new projects with support from your colleagues – Together, we bring ideas to life.
- You will publish your results in high-ranking journals and will support other scientists in doing so.
- You will supervise PhD and Master students.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- PhD-level qualification in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline with a focus on aircraft design. Alternatively, an MSc-level qualification with relevant professional experience may be accepted. A traceable scientific publication record is an asset.
- Proven experience in at least one of the following profiles: (i) aircraft design, (ii) in-flight icing, (iii) aircraft hydrogen fuel systems, and propulsion systems for aerospace. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to, airframe design, aircraft aerodynamics, multiphase flow simulation, numerical modelling, electrical simulation, experimental testing, and hydrogen storage and conversion systems. The candidate shall describe in the Cover Letter how his/her CV and his/her personal interests for future development match with at least one of the profiles above (explicitly referring to (i)–(iii)) and substantiate the claimed expertise with relevant publications and project participation consistent with the CV. Failure to provide this information in the Cover Letter will result in the rejection of the application.
- Programming skills in Python, MATLAB (including Simulink), C/C++, or similar languages are required. Understanding of 3D modelling methods (finite volume and/or finite element approaches) and experience with state-of-the-art industrial design and computational tools (e.g. ANSYS, Modelica, Dymola) are highly valued.
- Experience in testing laboratories, wind tunnel testing, and/or flight testing is considered a plus. Knowledge of flight dynamics is also an advantage.
- Experience in industrial aerospace projects and/or European research programmes (e.g. Horizon Europe, Clean Aviation), including understanding of the European aerospace research ecosystem is an asset.
- High level of motivation to pursue a scientific or research-oriented career. Strong self-motivation and personal drive are essential.
- Excellent communication skills in English, including proficiency in technical writing, are mandatory. Knowledge of German is desirable.
What to expect:
- The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) for the position as Scientist according to the collective agreement is EUR 61.334,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience. In addition, we offer company benefits, flexible working conditions, individual training and career opportunities.
- Starting date is expected in Q3-2026 (flexible). Applications will be accepted until June 30th, 2026, at 12:00 (CET). Early-bird applications are welcome since the selection process can start at an earlier stage.
At AIT, we create an inclusive and family-friendly working environment that promotes equal opportunities and actively strengthens diversity across our workforce and in leadership positions. Among other initiatives, we are committed to increasing the proportion of women in our company and therefore particularly welcome applications from female applicants.
Please submit your application online and ensure that you upload the following mandatory documents : CV, letter of motivation and a proof of identity. You may also upload other relevant certificates (for e.g., transcript of records, letters of recommendation).
