Last year we got involved a lot more in large scale CFD simulation of cities and landscapes. Here is a little comparison between a steady-state (RANS) simulation and a transient (time-dependent, URANS) simulation of the area of the United Nation Buildings in Vienna.
Though computationally more intensive, the transient simulation gives a much better insight into the dynamic behavior of wind in urban environments. For 2017 we are planning even bigger simulations involving entire landscapes, e....

In our latest video we show an experimental validation of our phase transition CFD solver. By condensing moist air on a cold metal mirror and measuring the temperature response we can compute the amount of condensed/evaporated moisture which we then compare to the CFD simulation :)
