Scientists from the Heidelberg University, mainly Kirchhoff-Institute for Physics, recently published their highly successful experiments in growing large, mm-sized single crystals of Li(Mn,Fe)PO4 at elevated argon pressure using the ScIDre HKZ furnace. High-quality single crystalline samples of olivine-structured orthophosphates LiMPO4 M = (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) are much sought-after, since they enable detailed investigations and a deeper understanding of the principles of lithium exchange in this ma...

The working group "Oxides and Fluorides" of the Leibniz Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ Berlin) recently ordered a specifically designed ScIDre HKZ high-temperature floating zone furnace for crystal growth of refractory materials with modular double-sided afterheater system.

Jun Zhao's group recently composed a Nature paper based on neutron scattering data obtained on the inorganic quantum spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4. The authors’ measurements suggest the existence of a clear upper excitation edge or a spinon Fermi surface for this material and might be the first momentum- and energy-dependent observations of a spinon metal. The optically transparent, cm-sized single crystals of YbMgGaO4 were grown with a ScIDre HKZ optical floating zone furnace at the Fudan U...

Single Crystal Growth of Pure Co3+ Oxidation State Material LaSrCoO4 Successful growth of large high-quality LaSrCoO4 single crystals was recently performed and reported by the crystal growth group from Max-Planck-Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, lead by Alexander Christoph Komarek. In the emerging open access crystallography journal “Crystals” the autors write that obtaining large, impurity-free single crystals was only possible using the high O2-pressure floating zone technique wit...

The group of Prof. Dr. Christian Pfleiderer, chair for the Topology of Correlated Systems at the Technical University of Munich, is well-known among other things for the growth of surpassing quality single crystals of intermetallic compounds. Consequently, the TUM group ordered a HKZ furnace which is specifically designed to create ultra-clean inert atmospheres and operate at high gas pressures of up to 50 bar.

In close cooperation with the Emerging Materials Group of John Mitchell from the Argonne National Laboratory (Illinois, USA), we just started a new development project. The goal is to create a highly advanced version of the high-pressure oxygen annealing furnace HSO, accordingly abbreviated A-HSO. This instrument will for the first time combine the possibilities to treat the sample under high temperatures, rapidly quench the sample to conserve metastable phases, enable high gas pressures and ha...

Our Levitation Melting Facility KTS, a multifunctional apparatus for alloying and casting of sensitive metallic rods using a levitated melt in a cold crucible, was ordered by the Solid State Chemistry Group of Prof. K. Conder from Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in Villingen, Switzerland. Avoidance of contamination by non-metallic inclusions is often crucial for the production of castings and feed rods of susceptible inter-metallic compounds. A method to prevent this contamination is the levitation melting method.
