The building opened in 2016 after an international architectural competition won by Henning Larsen in 2010. The design philosophy centered on openness and transparency, integrating heritage buildings from Wittelsbacherplatz while creating public courtyards and passages accessible to Munich residents. The architecture merges old and new, with tilted facades maximizing natural light and creating better working conditions.
Sustainability was built into the design from the beginning. The building features 800 solar panels covering 1,300 square meters with 250 kilowatt peak capacity, achieving up to 20% peak shaving on sunny days. Green roofs, advanced insulation, and a concrete activated foundational slab provide thermal management. A 5,500-meter water buffer tank enables thermal shifts of 150 to 400 kilowatts daily between spring and fall.
The headquarters operates as a smart building with over 30,000 sensors, 52 PX controllers, and 360 PXC3 controllers managing everything from automated blinds to daylight harvesting and intelligent shadowing systems. These technologies optimize lighting, temperature, and air quality while reducing energy consumption.
Currently, 1,700 employees are based at the headquarters, an increase of 800 people following the implementation of a hybrid working model post-pandemic. The building offers diverse spaces for collaboration including a canteen, fine dining restaurant, rooftop cafe, sports facilities, and conference rooms. The workspace continues to evolve with increased desk sharing and testing of new technologies to support future working models.
