For Philips Design, I was based in Eindhoven and Vienna. I contributed to the design and development of a variety of Philips products. This involved close cooperation with software engineers, product and graphic designers, product managers and other professionals in multidisciplinary teams. I was an occasional guest teacher at the Technical University, Eindhoven and at the Fachhochschule Joanneum in Graz, Austria

I worked in the Institute for Accident Research performing Human Factors research into health and safety of workplaces on ships, in control rooms, and in the hotel and catering industry. Much of this work resulted in the improvement of working conditions in these industries. I was the leader of a European research project into driving cars, which included team members from research institutes in France and the Netherlands, as well as the car companies Volvo, Renault and BMW.

I was loaned from TÜV Rheinland for a year to work with a multidisciplinary team developing the 'Ship of the Future', a new generation of container ships. This work was published in the book ‘Ergonomische Gestaltung von Schiffsarbeitsplätze’ (Ergonomic Design of Workplaces on Ships).

EFD was a small company providing ergonomics consultancy, particularly in the area of high-tech systems.

I assisted in research into learning difficulties.

I was involved in research into pedestrian behaviour, especially concerning the design of pedestrian crossings.
