Dr. Florian Abicht

At Plan.Net Business Intelligence I work in an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts in infrastructure, databases, statistics and analysis as well as marketing and media. As a data scientist I am dealing with: automatization and standardization of data integration and data processing using relational and non-relational databases; development of statistical methods, procedures, analytical models and innovative algorithms as well as software applications for internal and external clients.

The objective of my work at Startup Compass was to turn data-driven insights into strategic actions. I analyzed Compass’s proprietary ecommerce dataset containing financial and marketing data from merchants with more than $10B USD in annualized GMV. As a result, I improved Compass’s benchmarks and generated new recommendations and best practices to empower Compass’s users to increase revenue and profitability. To implement new numerical models and algorithms I worked with Ruby, Python, Pandas, SQL and Git.

In contribution to the emerging field of laser-particle-acceleration I planed, organized and led scientific projects with international participation and published the results in renowned journals. My work was based on the development of innovative software for data analysis, the advancement of imaging methods and analytical modeling. Scientifically, it revealed detailed insight into relativistic field dynamics of laser created plasmas and provided evidence for the discovery of a new phenomenon.

Working in the group of Prof. Dr. Peter Gilch, I participated on experiments investigating the photochemical relocations of nitro compounds using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy. In this connection I acquired extensive knowledge in the field of spectroscopy, laser physics, linear and non-linear optics, and physical chemistry. In addition, I addressed the analysis and evaluation of measured data and programmed a software routine for background correction and visualization of Raman spectra.

In the framework of my diploma thesis I participated on an extensive research campaign (EUCAARI-LONGREX) to investigate the properties of atmospheric aerosol. For this purpose I operated an airborne remote sensing system (LIDAR) during several research flights over Europe. Using computational data analysis I was able to define European-continental pollution aerosol by its specific optical properties. I presented the research findings at international conferences and published them in scientific journals.

As a dispatcher I was in charge to schedule the occupancy of available audio-control rooms for the news program “Abendschau”. It was my responsibility to coordinate voice over and audio dubbing of the latest television reports in a timed sequence that ensured a smooth completion of the whole program during broadcasting operation. Through this role I learned professional behavior and to stay calm and focused in hectic and tense situations. In addition, I participated in editorial and production meetings.

During my studies of physics I was engaged as a tutor and taught linear algebra for mathematicians at university.

During my internship at financial.com I was involved in the creation of a database for new issues and its German-English translation.

With my work at the Bavarian State School for Disabled People (Bayerischen Landesschule für Körperbehinderte) I fulfilled a civil service as an alternative to the obligatory military service. My job consisted in the supervision and support of mentally and physically handicapped children in pre-school and during after-school care.
