Haitham Abaza

• Within the scope of the European Joint Program on Rare Diseases (EJP-RD), aimed at building a FAIR-compliant virtual platform to connect the increasing number of rare disease resources via a central facility, I am involved in activities related to data modelling, interoperability, harmonization, standardization, and FAIRification of rare disease registries. I am also involved in the interoperability activities of the EU RD platform in cooperation with the Joint Research Center (JRC).

• Consultancy activities on the use of da Vinci surgical systems and the establishment of a first academic MSc program in Health Informatics at the Robotics Center of the Technological & Electrical Systems Company and Ain Shams University Medical School respectively.

• Investigated the applicability of eHealth and mHealth solutions in the developing world. • Conducted an RCT at MUST teaching hospital in Cairo, testing the use of mobile health technologies, particularly SMS messaging, in educating diabetic patients and promoting diabetes self-management. • Prepared various journal/conference publications (Methods Inf. Med., BMC PH, HELINA & MEDINFO).

• Designed and initiated the hospital’s mobile diabetes awareness program. • Supervised and instructed program announcement/advertisement and patient enrollment. • Carried out broad patient interviews. • Developed all program content (enrollment forms, interview questionnaires, information booklets, SMS messages, & a suggested diet leaflet). • Facilitated lab tests and patient examinations with hospital management and department heads. • Kept track of patients’ health data for evaluation & analysis.

• Reviewed medical devices, including mHealth and eHealth solutions, required for essential cardiology interventions, for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CVDs according to WHO literature. • Built an events calendar organizing the upcoming medical devices’ events and conferences in 2013. • Updated the list of health regulatory agencies present in WHO Member States. • Listed the biomedical engineering societies and institutions currently present in the WHO EMRO region. • Attended various seminars.

• Assistant of the Systems & Control course • Assistant of electronics labs and software-related graduation projects. • Instructor of summer training sessions held at the university teaching hospital. • Built a MS Access database to keep track of the department’s summer training program. • Worked on restructuring the department’s major sheet and curricula • Member of the faculty's quality assurance committee

• Being part of a joint team of UN and PwC professionals, I prepared a world tour report summarizing completed activities during recent UN duty stations visits. • Developed a MS Access events management database to manage stakeholders and organize events. • Conducted research on UN Secretariat completed/ongoing projects around the globe. • Developed orientation material for new staff members or interns. • Converted the ICT services narrative into a flow for MS Visio implementation.

• Had an overview of how their problem and change management policies were applied. • Observed the steps taken when a user reports a problem or when a change is requested. • Had an overview of their main banking system (Flex-Cube) and checks monitoring system (Checks32).

• Supported both Oracle Purchasing (PO) and Oracle Process Manufacturing (OPM) Inventory modules and provided user training when needed. • Prepared database reports using Microsoft Crystal Reports and FrontPage (ASP Programming). • Developed internal applications using Oracle, MS SQL Server, MS Access, and Visual Studio.Net.

• Issued an Egyptian version of medical equipment manufacturing standards in cooperation with the Egyptian Organization for Standardization & Quality Control (EOS) and in line with international standards such as ISO and IEC. • Published a paper introducing quality management models for healthcare institutions such as CMM, ISO, JCAHO, SIX SIGMA, etc.

• Had a brief overview of how most of the hospital’s equipment worked. • Observed the repair and preventive maintenance of some instruments.

• Gained knowledge of Microsoft Crystal Reports. • Modified existing reports according to business requirements.

• Learned to inspect, repair, and calibrate laboratory instruments (mostly Photometers). • Taught to write repair reports.

Titled mHealth Solutions for Low and Middle Income Countries, the thesis examines the applicability of mHealth in the developing world and involves a pilot RCT at a university hospital in Cairo-Egypt, testing the use of SMS technology in educating and monitoring diabetic patients.

Titled Appropriate Medical Technologies for Developing Countries, the thesis introduced a health technology assessment methodology and an evidence-based decision support software system that guides healthcare providers through the acquisition of appropriate medical devices.

Graduation Project: The Virtual Orthodontic Clinic comprised a dedicated software to support orthodontists in registering patients’ data, saving treatment plans, obtaining facial calculations, and displaying post-treatment facial changes.
