Dr. Hector Perez Ponce

As software department manager, I am in charge of the research and software development for our X-photon counting detectors. Our software provides fast communication with frame rates upto of 700 images/s, while delivering quasi-noiseless imaging. We collaborate with the LIMA and EPICS community to provide an imXPAD open source plugin to incorporate our detectors to the infrastructure of synchrotron facilities LIMA imxpad camera.

My task was to integrate 3D infrared tracking system into ClearPEM machine. This machine is a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) device for breast scans. The integration of 3D tracking system allows to register PET and ultrasound volumes in order to improve breast cancer diagnosis.

In collaboration with the openGATE community to generate the Monte-Carlo simulation code that runs in NVIDIA graphics cards (GPU). The aim of my work was to accelerate simulations in order to make them practically useful. Using Intel's processors (CPU), one single CT (Computed Tomography) simulation can take up to 17 days to be performed. By using our code running in graphic cards, the same simulation only takes around two hours.

My research focus was the optimisation of the CEDM technique for the early identification of breast cancer. The basic idea was to obtain mammographic images pre and post-injection of a contrast medium. After the acquisition, the images were subtracted from each other. The resulting image showed precisely the position of the tumor as the anatomical breast background was "vanished". My work showed the efficiency of the results when the subtracted images were acquired using the same X-ray exposition energy.

While waiting for my Ph.D. Degree scholarship, I developed the automatization of the call reception server of a security call-center company. The software was created in 2004, updated in 2010 and it is still being used in the company.

I was in charge of the assembly and start-up of a textile machinery, including after-sales services, and technical staff training.
