Ing. Jose Adrian Vega Vermehren

As a research assistant, I collaborated on the execution and analysis of multiple experiments on the visual strategies employed by navigating ants. Furthermore, I collaborated on the implementation of an insect-inspired-navigation-demo for a working drone. By the end of my internship, I took over the analysis of an experiment on the learning behavior of ants and wrote my bachelor thesis around the topic.

As the official tutor for the Chemistry I (an organic) and Chemistry II (organic) courses, I developed an additional learning script based on the lectures and book material. The script alternatively approaches complex topics and highlights the main concepts of the course. On a weekly basis, I held 120 min tutoring hours during which I presented the script, answered queries and oversaw exercises designed to help the student prepare for the final examination.

Neuroethology research on the vertical landing and learning process of Bombus terrestris under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tobias Seidl. We took over the insect landing experiments of Prof. Seidl. For the first time, we performed the experiments on bumblebees (instead of bees), which required us to completely rethink the experimental setup. Over the lapse of six months (daily experiments), we acquired enough data for a significant analysis on the learning behavior during landing maneuvers.

As an intern in the Customer Solutions department, I followed through the development of an engineering solution project. As part of the consulting team for a beverage manufacturer in Mexico City, we analyzed the automatization requirement, planned and quoted a solution and implemented the required hardware and software.
