Mustafa Durmus

I led three large-scale biodiversity offset projects in the energy sector, aligned with EBRD standards, in forest and steppe ecosystems along the TANAP and TurkStream pipelines. I also coordinated two FAO-funded steppe biodiversity monitoring projects. Additionally, I worked as an ecologist in various projects, conducted fieldwork in Kosovo on forest biodiversity, and contributed to a regional FAO-SEC initiative on forest biodiversity monitoring.

In this position, I was actively involved in all stages of the mitigation hierarchy. I played a guiding role in ensuring that construction teams operated in compliance with national and international regulations. I developed methods to minimize the environmental impact caused by the teams and supervised on-site practices together with my team, which included an ecologist, flora specialist, environmental engineers, and archaeologists.

Conducted fauna inventories, track and scat surveys, and camera trap studies in forests. Collaborated with ecologists to identify conservation zones similar to NATURA 2000 sites. Documented threats to biodiversity and contributed to ecosystem-based forest management by preparing reports, publications, and conservation recommendations.

Conducted mammal surveys in Sinop using track, scat, and camera trap data. Produced distribution maps and modeled species presence with MaxEnt. Identified priority species and developed a monitoring program. Managed biodiversity data, used GIS tools, collaborated with specialists, published findings, and trained local staff on mammal conservation practices.

Conducted mammal surveys in Adana using track, scat, and camera trap data. Created species and habitat maps, identified priority species and areas, and developed a monitoring program. Contributed to three projects: In the Black Sea Conservation Planning Project, managed biodiversity data and mapped key areas (SPA/SAC). In the Red Book of Butterflies in Türkiye, supported the IUCN Red List process by managing and mapping national butterfly records. In the Forest Biodiversity Project, mapped priority forest species and authored the large mammal section of ecosystem-based forest management plans.
