My duties entailed the maintenance, management and upgrades of Extreme Black Diamond, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, and Avaya switches; Fortinet and Checkpoint firewalls; and Infoblox IP/DHCP system. I also installed and maintained an MRTG system; gathering of switch port statistics using scripts written in Perl and utilising MySQL for statistical storage; writing CGI scripts using Perl for statistics reporting and the manipulation of an Excel spread sheet to update the Nagios configuration files.

my primary responsibility was the management and maintenance of the CiscoWorks network management platforms, of which there were four, one covering each of the areas of our department’s responsibility. My tasks included the day to day operational state of each system - fixing issues, working with Cisco TAC to resolve problems, updating system software and drivers - identifying problem devices in the network and fixing the communication between the CiscoWorks platform and the device itself.

My remit was to reduce the number of errors reported by the management platforms by proactively validating the configuration of the various Cisco routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls that made up the networking infrastructure.
