Yohana Berhe

For master thesis project, conducted groundbreaking research at ETH Zurich's Bioprocess laboratory of Prof. Sven Panke's group, focusing on pioneering tools for bacteriophage genome engineering. Successfully developed a genome-editing tool for previously challenging phages, broadening their applications in biotechnology and research, particularly in directed evolution studies. This breakthrough opens new avenues for utilizing these phages across various fields.

Focused on characterizing withanolide biosynthetic genes in Physalis grisea, I expressed gene clusters in Nicotiana benthamiana using golden gate cloning and Western blot techniques. Withanolide, a medically significant compound with anticancer properties. During this project, I honed my skills in experimental design, golden gate cloning, gel electrophoresis, Western blot analysis, bacterial culture, and plant genetic modification.
