The Position
The Institute of Human Biology (IHB) is a newly established research center in Basel, Switzerland, dedicated to advancing human biology through the use of human model systems for translational research. Our dynamic and interdisciplinary environment fosters collaboration among biologists, engineers, and data scientists, bridging the gap between academic and pharmaceutical research. Closely associated with Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED), we partner with leading academic institutions both locally and globally to address grand challenges with bold, innovative science.
The Opportunity
The Organoid Systems Biology group is seeking a highly motivated intern to join its Molecular Probing Team. You will be part of an exciting scientific community at the IHB and receive mentorship by experts in cell and molecular biology, computer science, and organoid engineering.
In this role, you will:
Generate and maintain patient-derived healthy and tumor organoids.
Genetically modify cell lines using CRISPR/Cas9.
Molecular cloning of fluorescent reporters and introduce them in cells using transient and stable viral transduction methods.
Live cell imaging and characterization of fluorescent reporters.
Present research findings to project and cross-functional teams within IHB.
Maintain a detailed electronic lab notebook (ELN) and data records.
Who You are:
Passionate about science and have a Master’s degree completed within the past 12 months, or a current PhD candidate in Biological Sciences or a related field
Hands-on experience in sterile cell culture methods is a must. Experience with primary cell cultures will be an advantage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a non-technical audience.
Experience with wide-field or confocal fluorescence microscopy and basic coding literacy in python would be a plus.
Team player with the ability to work independently and diligently translate mentoring feedback into your own work, proactively reporting results and challenges to the project lead.
Resilient, especially during difficult times, while remaining highly self-motivated to find innovative solutions, and willing to take responsibility and ownership of your project.
