In this video, we explore aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), one of the most important engineering materials in modern industry. From its natural occurrence as a mineral to its extraction from bauxite and its wide range of high-tech applications, aluminium oxide demonstrates how a simple compound of aluminium and oxygen enables countless technologies.
What you will learn in this video:
🔺 What aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) is and how it is formed
🔺 The origin of the term "alumina" and its connection to minerals such as corundum, ruby, and sapphire
🔺 How aluminium oxide is produced using the Bayer process
🔺 Why aluminium oxide is an indispensable material for ceramics, high-temperature applications, and aluminium production
🔺 How aluminium oxide is used in modern technologies, from smartphones and lasers to aerospace applications
🔺 Why its exceptional chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties make it a high-performance engineering material
At Ermafa Environmental Technologies, we develop innovative solutions for sustainable industrial processes. By better understanding and advancing the materials that shape our world, we contribute to a more efficient and sustainable future.

At the beginning of May, we participated together with our sister companies at IFAT in Munich and presented our joint exhibition stand. ♻️
Wolfgang Kapaun, Project Lead at REDREC, was available to visitors at the trade fair as the contact person for our Bauxite Residue recycling project. We sincerely thank him for representing our project so excellently at the exhibition. 🤝
The significance of Bauxite Residue become apparent through the sheer size of the problem on a global scale. With a global alumina production of around 154 million tonnes in 2025, approximately 150 to 300 million tonnes of red mud are generated as a by-product. 📊
This residual material from aluminium production is still often regarded as waste, although we at Ermafa Environmental Technologies see it as a valuable material with new industrial and ecological utilization potential.
For this very reason, Wolfgang is so important as the lead of this project. He has not only recognized this enormous potential but is actively working to further develop it.
In the video, Wolfgang explains how Bauxite Residue can be separated into an iron-rich fraction and a depleted fraction, and what utilization possibilities arise from this.
The iron-rich fraction can be used in the steel industry for iron production.
The depleted fraction offers potential as an additive in concrete, for brick materials, as well as an adsorption material in gas cleaning.
Our prototype system is currently in the implementation phase: partner structure and planning are completed, and validation in a real industrial environment will follow.
More about the current implementation phase can be found in the video. 🌱

In May 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming numerous visitors to our joint booth at IFAT and engaging in many inspiring conversations about sustainable environmental technologies.
A special “thank you” goes to our colleague Laura, who represented us on-site with great dedication in her role as Project and Product Manager. With her expertise, passion for innovative technologies, and approachable personality, she became the go-to contact for many visitors at our booth. 🤝
In the interview, Laura shares insights into her focus on PlasmaSun and explains why the development of sustainable technologies is more important today than ever before. Global uncertainties, our dependence on fossil fuels, and the growing impact of climate change highlight the urgent need to explore new approaches and actively address existing challenges.
As a research- and development-driven company, we are committed to developing solutions for real-world environmental challenges every day. Our goal is to advance sustainable technologies, contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions, and help create a more sustainable future for generations to come. 🌱

From Red Mud to Resource – at Ermafa Environmental Technologies for a Sustainable Circular Economy 🌱
During the production of aluminum oxide, a by-product is generated that causes major ecological challenges worldwide: red mud – highly toxic and difficult to dispose of. ☢️
We are researching innovative solutions to reduce this threat to humans and nature and to transform red mud into valuable materials in line with the principles of the circular economy. ♻️
To make the connections between red mud, aluminum production, and our innovative process more understandable, we have launched a video series. 👀
In the first episode, we focus on the raw material bauxite; its history, discovery, and importance for the aluminum industry. ⚙️
What you will learn in this video:
🔺 What is bauxite? Composition, properties & aluminum content
🔺 Name origin & global deposits: from Southern France to Australia
🔺 Uses: from aluminum to rare earth elements
🔺 Importance for industry. Why our economy depends on it
🔺 Environmental impact: open-pit mining, rainforest loss, soil & water pollution
🔺 Future & recycling: how red mud processing strengthens resource security
📣 Share your opinion with us:
Do you think recycling bauxite waste will become more important than mining itself in the future? Let us know in the comments!
