Millicent Goldschmidt is a microbiologist who had a profound impact on the US space programme, including the development of microbiological techniques to be used on the moon. She became a pioneering advocate for women in microbiology. To honour her great contributions to the field of microbiology, particularly in the area of rapid testing methods for the detection of microbial contaminants, DSMZ researchers named the strain Blastococcus goldschmidtiae (DSM 46792) after her.

Emmanuelle Charpentier is a French microbiologist, geneticist and biochemist. In 2020, Charpentier and biochemist Jennifer Doudna were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking work on the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology. This was the first science Nobel Prize ever won by two women only. To honour her great contributions to microbiology, genetics and biochemistry, DSMZ researchers named the strain Pseudonocardia charpentierae (DSM 45834) after her.

Jane Gibson (1924-2008) was a British-American microbiologist and biochemist who studied photosynthetic bacteria. Before her work, selenium was only known to be toxic; afterwards, its status was known to be a matter of balance. She was at the forefront of the molecular sequencing era of bioinformatic analysis. To honour her great contributions to the field of microbial physiology and biochemistry, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces gibsoniae (DSM 41699) after her.

Elizabeth Wellington is renowned for her work on the microbiomes in our environment, including soil, plants, and rivers. Her group was one of the first to report the molecular detection of antibiotic biosynthesis in soil. She is also known for her efforts to promote this field by sharing research methods and running workshops. To honour her great contributions to microbiomes and environmental microbiology, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomonospora wellingtoniae (DSM 45055) after her.

Suzanne Lambin (1902-2008) was a pharmacist and microbiologist who excelled throughout her career when women were just beginning to have the right to study and practice medicine and pharmacy. A pioneer in biomedicine and biomathematics, she became the first woman to hold a chair at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Paris in 1951. Antje Boetius is a German marine biologist, professor and director of Germany's polar research hub. She and her team discovered methane-eating bacteria that are allies in the fight against greenhouse gases. Boetius has led several international research expeditions and has participated in about 40 marine biology expeditions. To honour her outstanding contributions to marine microbiology, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces boetiae (DSM 44917) after her.

Johanna Döbereiner (1924-2000) was a world-renowned microbiologist, agronomist and pioneer in soil biology. Her family left Germany after the Second World War. She became a Brazilian citizen in 1956 and played an important role in Brazilian soybean production by promoting legumes that relied solely on biological nitrogen fixation. To honour her significant contributions in the field of plant-microbe interaction, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces doebereineriae (DSM 41640) after her.

To honour her major contribution in the field of microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces gottesmaniae (DSM 3412) after her.
