Applications Engineer (R&D) helping develop high performance dimmable LED driver chips.

After some twenty years or so of working as an engineer, it appears that my skills are mainly those of analyzing problems and coming up with solutions to them. I can draw upon those years of experience in a diverse range of fields, from electronics to optics, to acoustics, to fluidics... I've solved enough problems to see patterns and analogies between fields to help speed up the solution process.

PCB Engineer for LED lighting products company. Dealt with issues concerning high power LEDs on printed circuit boards. Metal core and FR4 boards, single sided and double sided with capped and filled vias.

Manufacturing engineer for electronics controller line of products. Our customers are primarily biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Performed Validation on Hospital IV pump. My responsibilities dealt primarily with Human Factors issues. I designed tests to demonstrate that our product met its design goals with respect to usabilty issues. This was my third contract position with Hospira.

Utilizing my problem-solving skills to characterize the performance of hospital IV pumps and determine causes of any poor performance found. Design of Experiments, fluidics, metallurgy, electronics are some of the skills brought to tasks at hand. Prior experience with pumps being tested is also a great help.

Worked with R&D engineers to test prototypes of product prior to release to production. Emphasis on "Four-Corners Testing" of USB communications, sensor characterization, and RF Transmit and Receive functionality. Designed and implemented test procedures and Excel test matrices for subsequent testing. Wrote and illustrated documentation of test procedures and communication protocols for later testing by others. Trained colleagues in these techniques by working one-on-one with them.

I took a rather short contract position in a group that was in the process of being disbanded. In order for the group to complete some of their customer obligations (before "turning off the lights and locking the door" ), I was tasked with completing some functional test beds for an electrical power conditioner for home and business. I also worked on functional test fixtures for remote wireless home medical monitors.

This was a generally very enjoyable position for me, utilizing many of my skills and much of my knowledge to solve a particular problem. I worked primarily on air "generation" issues with new hospital IV pump. I utilized knowledge of fluid behavior in small gauge plastic tubing, of surface properties of plastic tubing (hydrophilic vs. hydrophobic), of photography and high speed video to demonstrate problems and solutions.

Developed electronics for automated pharmaceutical screening device. Also developed nanoliter dispense fluidics.
