Michael Wintergerst

Michael Wintergerst is part of IBM’s ecosystem unit as the Global Chief Technology Officer across all brands for the SAP business.

Since August 2020 Michael Wintergerst is Executive Vice President, Head of Vehicle and Cloud Platform at Volkswagen AG. He is leading a global development organization. Amongst his responsibilities are Volkswagen’s vw.os platform, big data infrastructure and lifecycle management.

Since August 2018 Michael Wintergerst is Development Senior Executive, Senior Vice President, Head of SAP Cloud Platform Core at SAP. He is leading a 1,000+ global development organization in the area of SAP Cloud Platform with teams in Germany, Israel, Bulgaria, India, and China. Amongst his responsibilities are SAP’s Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, application server, data management, security, and development experience offerings.

From June 2016 to July 2018 Michael Wintergerst was Development Senior Executive, SVP, Head of SAP Cloud Platform Core at SAP. He is leading a 1,000+ global development organization in the area of SAP Cloud Platform with teams in Germany, Israel, Bulgaria, India, and China. Amongst his responsibilities are SAP’s Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, application server, data management, security, and development experience offerings.

From January 2015 to May 2016 Michael Wintergerst was Senior Manager and Chief Product Owner at SAP. He was leading several development teams and responsible for SAP's own Java Virtual Machine, the so-called SAP JVM, as well as the LLVM (Low Level Virtual Machine) technology, application server infrastructure technology (Java and Node.js), and Core Database Services used in the SAP HANA Platform. Additionally, he was responsible for SAP NetWeaver Application Server Java.

From October 2009 to December 2014 Michael Wintergerst was Development Manager and Technical Lead at SAP. He was leading several development teams and responsible for SAP's own Java Virtual Machine, the so-called SAP JVM, as well as the LLVM (Low Level Virtual Machine) technology, application server infrastructure technology (Java and Node.js), and Core Database Services used in the SAP HANA Platform.

From January 2005 to September 2009 Michael Wintergerst was Development Architect at SAP in the area of Java VM technology dealing with low-level VM technology like garbage collection algorithms, memory, and thread management, as well as monitoring and profiling tools.

From April 2002 to December 2004 Michael Wintergerst was Developer at SAP in the VM Container Project which worked on bringing a Java VM next to an ABAP VM within one operating system process allowing for fast in-memory communication between ABAP and Java.

From 1997 to 2002 Michael Wintergerst studied computer science (major) and electrical engineering (minor) at the Technical University of Dortmund. There, he specialized in parallel algorithms which make heavy use of numeric mathematics, hardware architecture, and parallel computer systems.
