Dr. Patrick Chavez

I manage the Power Labs business unit of Powertech, which consists of the High Power Lab and the High Current Lab. These labs provide specialized testing services to power equipment manufacturers and utilities from around the world. The tests they perform range from certified design/type and routine testing in accordance with international standards such as IEEE/ANSI and IEC to R&D and prototype verification testing.

Innovol is a profitable privately held R&D company taking a generalist approach in creating fundamentally innovative solutions to difficult technological problems. Already, Innovol successfully developed a novel proprietary quantitative portfolio management system derived with machine learning for trading in publicly traded securities, which substantially outperforms other passive and active equity portfolio management strategies and which has been exclusively licensed to a US hedge fund.

• Guiding technical developments and ensuring that engineering requirements are satisfied • Conceptual and detailed design including identifying and removing technical risk related to low magnetic field cryogenic subsystems and integration and interfacing with the other hardware subsystems supporting development of a quantum annealing processor • Numerical modeling, simulation, and analysis with MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics (finite element analysis) in support of design and testing

• Member of the research and development team for the creation of a novel optics-based high-voltage transducer. Responsible for the theoretical basis and proof of concept of the device. • Professional engineer responsible for execution and management of research, design, modeling, type and routine IEC/IEEE testing and analysis, manufacturing, field installations, and customer documentation and service of novel optical voltage and current instrumentation transformers for the T&D industry

• Teaching EECE261 Engineering Electromagnetics, a core second year course for electrical and computer engineering students

• Extensive teaching assistant experience in third and fourth year undergraduate courses in the fields of applied electromagnetics, control theory, and digital signal processing. • Responsibilities included classroom tutorials, lab-work guidance, and marking. • Received 1999 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, based on teaching effectiveness and voted on by the students.

(summers only) • Training for market analysis and world-wide sales of gas turbines for single cycle, combined cycle, and cogeneration power plants at the Gas Turbine Marketing Department

• Derived and implemented (in MATLAB) two-dimensional and three-dimensional boundary integral/finite element simulation tools for quasi-static electric field modeling of high-voltage structures. • Created the theoretical basis for novel optical voltage sensors for high-voltage metering and relaying

• Derived and implemented a finite element formulation to solve the nonlinear drift-diffusion equations for semiconductor devices in two dimensions using MATLAB.
