Tenure Track positions for a Researcher in TinyML and Operational EdgeAI at Bruno Kessler Foundation
Über diesen Job
Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) is a private research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. Each research area is assigned to a specific research centre, of which there are eleven totals. Information regarding the research centres, their activities and production is available at
https://www.fbk.eu/research-centers
.
The
Digital Industry Center
is one of the Centers of FBK. It focuses its research on digital technologies for the various domains in industry (e.g., manufacturing, aerospace, railway, automotive, energy, agriculture, manufacturing) by creating applications for critical systems, adaptive and autonomous systems, advanced perception, diagnostics, quality control, and prediction systems. Further research areas include precision farming, robotics, metrology, cultural heritage, and geomatics.
The OpenIoT research unit focuses on advanced research and development in the field of precision agriculture. Its mission is to design and deploy innovative solutions leveraging IoT technologies, cloud/edge-native architectures, AI-driven decision support systems, machine learning, and autonomous field robotics. The unit operates in close collaboration with international academic and industrial partners, contributing to both applied research and real-world impact. More information about the OpenIoT research unit is available at https://openiot.fbk.eu/ .
Job Description
The purpose of FBK’s Tenure Track programme is to offer high-level professionals a structured career path toward tenure, supporting the organization’s long-term strategy. FBK is recruiting a dynamic, highly motivated researcher to join the OpenIoT Research Unit and report directly to the Unit Head.
This position provides the opportunity to contribute to applied research and technology transfer in precision agriculture and related domains, with a focus on EdgeAI and the operationalization of Machine Learning on constrained edge devices (e.g., microcontrollers), including TinyML/TinyMLOps workflows and learning approaches under limited supervision.
The candidate will be expected to conduct high-quality research within the OpenIoT Unit’s research lines and contribute to its scientific output and financial sustainability.
The successful candidate is expected to:

The candidate will be expected to conduct high-quality research within the OpenIoT Unit’s research lines and contribute to its scientific output and financial sustainability.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- Design, implement and validate TinyML/EdgeAI solutions targeting constrained devices, including robust deployment and update strategies across the model lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain operational TinyMLOps workflows for far-edge scenarios (automation, reproducibility, monitoring and continuous improvement).
- Investigate and evaluate unsupervised and weakly supervised approaches (e.g., anomaly detection) suited to real-world conditions and limited labels; contribute to high-quality scientific dissemination and mentoring of junior researchers.
- The candidate will work closely with other members of the research unit, and as needed with other units of the Center and external partners, contributing to research projects, technology transfer activities, and the dissemination of results in both academic and public venues.
FBK actively seeks diversity and inclusion in the workplace and is also committed to promoting gender equality.
