This career break included backpacking and working around the earth covering 19 countries.

This was a highly variable position teaching English and music to students ranging from 3 to 17 years of age in various schools throughout the city of Hanoi, Vietnam. Responsibilities included curriculum design, class preparation, teaching, assigning homework and marking of coursework.

This position involved the processing of bioassay quality documents, the bulk of these documents were made up of a combination of laboratory investigation reports, deviation reports and responses to facility audit reports issued by clients and regulatory authorities. Other major responsibilities included the management of all aspects of testing in the absence of the project leader.

Main duties included: • Calculation of dose for the administration of test item • Preparation and witnessing of biological potency assays for various clients using bulk toxin and venom • Centrifugation techniques, sera extraction, compilation of test results, data entry and statistical analysis • Laboratory maintenance as well as calibration, cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment • Environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, light and pressure)

Responsible for carrying out research at the Marine Institute of Ireland headquarters in Oranmore, Co. Galway, Ireland as part of a master’s degree at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland resulting in the compilation of a master’s thesis “An Investigation into the Environmental Significance of Metal Contaminants in Various Matrices from Tralee Bay, Co. Kerry, Ireland”.

Main duties included: • Thickness testing of metallic water/ gas pipelines installed in power stations to monitor corrosion through the use of electronic ultrasonic radio wave transmittance • Determining successful fusion between metallic pipelines and other components through gamma ray exposure and subsequent film development, magnetic particle and dye penetrant inspection Other duties included data entry, report writing, laboratory maintenance, radioactive source maintenance.

Carrying out research as part of a study into the population distribution of the marine bivalve buccinum undatum. The results of this study would later be published and featured in the Marine Times, February 2008 issue.
