Working alongside the Senior Vice President for Purchasing, implemented purchasing transformation (new governance, revised strategic sourcing processes, improved reporting and performance monitoring). Mainly project based engineering spend in excess of €1bn spread across multiple business units from different countries. Delivered €multi-million commitments to savings from the business units. Led the analysis of spend and performance analysis utilising data warehouse (SAP) and business unit inputs.

Delivered improved financial supply chain risk management processes, strategic recommendations for dual sourcing (to reduce risk) and a unique solution for analysing over 60,000 automotive parts (addressing a €multi-billion spend). The latter gathered information from multiple systems and provided analysis from a risk and sourcing perspective.

Commissioned by Derbyshire, on behalf of the East Midlands Councils and Department of Health to complete the work documenting the TRIPS project and making the software available

Led the development of a national data warehouse solution for detailed analysis of social care spend and activity, working with councils from across England (especially the East Midlands). Significant involvement and contribution to revised national social care performance reporting (CIPFA, LGA, etc).

Developed nationally published “commissioning” related guidelines to help councils deliver savings (make or buy, outcome based contracting, etc.) on a national spend of £17bn. Project managed lean efficiency improvements for social care services in a number of councils (West Midlands & South West). Facilitated East of England councils to agree to regional wide standard terms, conditions, and performance monitoring.

Project managed changes to processes, templates, contracts etc., for the purchasing of computer hardware components. Led cross-functional sourcing strategy development for the same commodities and facilitated standardisation of the product portfolio to enable greater benefits of scale in purchasing terms, leading to annual savings of up to 6% (depending on commodity) on a spend of approximately €400m. Managed the analysis and optimisation of factory and product distribution logistics.

Interim Head of Procurement (£40m spend) leading the implementation of public sector based purchasing processes and commercial activities associated with subsequent dissolution (novation and transfer of activities).

Associate consultant to Cap Gemini Ernst & Young managing the consultancy team responsible for facilitating collaborative sourcing across all 40 Scottish health authorities with a spend of £1+bn. Managed development of spend analysis, benefits tracking, training materials and implemented sourcing strategies encompassing direct and indirect health commodities.

Managed financial and benefits reporting (data warehouse solution, $175m spend). Outsourced sheet metal work (25% savings). Transferred the supply base and related ERP information (including order quantity / batch size optimisation) associated with closure of a UK plant and transfer of production to Belgium / Germany.

Managed implementation of financial and performance management for outsourced IT services (Europe). Led global cross-functional sourcing strategy implementation for PCs (savings 30% on spend of over $60m).

Subject matter expertise on IT Acquisition. Advice and guidance on the structure of a new IT procurement organisation. Expert input to IT Outsourcing Services (provider versus customer).

Project managed a global commercial / technical team to reduce life-cycle costs associated with PC acquisition. Achieved contractual commitments to approx. 30% savings on a spend of around $60m.

Telecoms (Ericsson): led opportunity development / implementation of Europe wide IT commodity strategic sourcing initiatives and managed the commercial processes (including country business cases for selecting and contracting with vendors) for provision of €100m Western European wide IT outsourcing services leading to a 30% cost reduction and a significant transfer of risk to the supplier. UK Oil & Gas: A key member of the small Shell / Ernst & Young team which was responsible for a UK industry wide initiative called ‘Supply Chain Management in the UK Oil and Gas Sector’. Co-managed and executed a two year UK Continental Shelf Oil & Gas Exploration benchmarking project involving 15 offshore operators. Utilities: Implementation of business process changes associated with the introduction of Domestic Gas Competition within the UK.

Managed the Project Management Office (an integrated BP/contractor team) for oil & gas projects with a capital spend of £40m to £300m. Included “alliance” based value engineering activities: life cycle economic modelling, capital cost estimating, opportunity identification, detailed planning, cost control and risk management. Led external stakeholder interfaces with BP operations, asset management and specialist services as well as with partner construction and installation contractors and major suppliers.

Developed and managed elements of a leading edge 'global office' initiative covering engineering, materials management and procurement IT systems associated with major capital engineering projects.

Implementation of advanced parallel processing based software control and data acquisition (SCADA) solution for the collection of domestic utility meter usage. Provided software development and documentation services covering advanced parallel processing hardware and software. Developed software and wrote the hardware manual for the Atari Transputer workstation (running the first parallel version of Unix and X-Windows).
